Rembrandt’s Self-Portrait with Beret and Turned-up Collar by David Henty

£10,000.00

About the painting: Rembrandt’s Self-Portrait with Beret and Turned-up Collar was painted in 1659.  In his life, he painted over 40 self-portraits, making him for me, the master of this type of painting. In copying it, I found the physiological aspect the hardest to recreate.  Rembrandt painted this portrait after suffering severe financial failure and capturing the suffering in his deep-set eyes was not easy as you need to feel it in order to recreate it successfully. I had to step into the artist’s shoes and stare deep into his soul to channel the stresses and strains that he suffered. On completion of this painting, I was exhausted but I also felt a great sense of satisfaction.

Rembrandt’s motto was “The work is finished when the master has achieved his intention in it”.  Rembrandt certainly made his emotions felt in this portrait, if that was his intention.
The original portrait hangs in The Nation Gallery of Art, Washington DC
